Boris Schatz Oil Paintings
Artist of the Diaspora—Not he who portrays
to us the life of his nation in the Galuth,
but he who does not regard his nation in Galuth.
(From my epigrams).
I drew these pictures in the past years during the brief free intervals from my difficult work and bitter worry concerning Bezalel—especially during sleepless nights.
To the execution of these pictures I devoted little time, like the musician to his concert after years of preparation - but to their creation I devoted all my life. All this lives within me as a son of my people. They are memories that I expressed also in words, appended to this book. I have previously done most of this work in sculpture in its various phases, already known to the world and particularly to the Jewish world.
But the technique of sculpture is not a simple one and not easily understood if one wishes to express the soul of his subject, and I seek particularly to express the soul of our people, felt in our prophets, in our festivals, in our customs, our rejoicing and our mourning. That is why 1 tried to draw these pictures and to complete them with embossed frames that add to the spirit and style of our art. I presented the subjects as they appear in my mind — in the same warm light that pours into and fills my heavy heart. May every Jew look upon them in the same way.
״That which pours forth from the heart enters into the heart“.
Prof. B. Schatz.
All the pictures are drawn with oil colors on wood. Each is in brass frame, repoussee. The size indicated on each picture of course includes the frame.
