The Pat Wall Gallery - Oils by Bezalel Schatz

Written By: Gertrude M Harris

The vigor and explosive color, the great force of Bezalel Schatz, grows from a devotion to the earth and an understanding of what is upon the earth. It is as if his inner fire were related to that fire within the earth that caused volcanoes to erupt, transposed onto canvas with a simplicity carried intelligently far.

Born in Jeruselem, Palestine, Bezalel had his first exhibition at the age of fourteen. He came to this country in 1930 to show his paintings in a joint exhibition with his father, Professor Boris Schatz, who founded the "Bezalel Arts and Crafts College” and the National Museum in Jeruselem.

He represented Palestine at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933 with four paintings in the International exhibition, and lived and painted in Paris from 1933 to 1937, during which time he had many one-man shows all over Europe. In 1937, he was invited again to the United States to show his father’s, his sister’s and his own paintings.

Bezalel Schatz was one of the four painters living in this country to be included in the large Expressionist exhibit to commemorate El Greco’s 400th Anniversary, arranged under the direction of J. B Neumann in the Cincinnati Museum in 1941.

Since the war, he has devoted his time to designing and silk-screen printing the book, "Into the Night Life” in collaboration with the author, Henry Miller. This book represents a milestone in the art of book making, creating complete unity of text and design, and is one of the masterpieces of modern book-making.

Today he lives quietly and busily with his wife in Big Sur.
